Chapter 16

Who would have guessed that the visit to a lawyer’s office would be the best part of her day? Scarlett set down her mascara wand on the counter in the bathroom and picked up the antacids she’d bought earlier that day. She popped the last one out of the blister pack.

It had been great to meet Alan Lloyd in person. He’d introduced her to his legal staff as well as a few members of the entertainment management team he worked with, then settled her into his high-rise office overlooking downtown to get down to the nitty-gritty. Scarlett was getting used to business talk, and Alan had been careful to answer all her questions without being condescending. Everybody seemed to be happy when the meeting came to a close, and Scarlett was glad to have a plan in place in case somebody contacted her about her music.

Cordelia was waiting for her outside the building. The other Hopewellian was sunning herself on the edge of a fountain. “Everything good?”

“Very good.”

“Ready for more shopping?”

“And then tomorrow we can go to a theme park?” Scarlett countered. Meetings and shopping were cool, but there were rides calling her name.

“Definitely.”

“Then yes, shopping.”

“But first, lunch. I found a sushi place down the street. Colleen’s stores aren’t expecting us till this afternoon anyway.”

They’d spent hours in the stores. Fortunately, Colleen had been available to send a thumbs-up or thumbs-down when they sent her pictures of them in various dresses. Cordelia had bought two dresses, and Scarlett returned to the hotel with three dress bags: two party dresses, and a long evening gown that Cordelia insisted she buy for her next awards ceremony.

They’d ordered room service again after their mani-pedi appointments in the hotel’s spa and barely had enough time to finish their meals before it was time to start getting ready.

Now Scarlett was standing in front of the bathroom mirror, wondering what she was doing. Her red hair was tamed into a sleek ponytail. Her fingernails felt heavy under the layers of purple polish. Her dress was relatively modest by Hollywood standards, according to what she’d seen other women wearing, but between it and her new high heels, she was being hit hard with imposter syndrome. This was not her.

She placed her hands on the counter and leaned closer to the mirror. This might not be her all the time, but it could be her tonight. She could be this Scarlett, and not a waitress, a lottery winner, a restaurant owner. She could be Scarlett St. James the award-winning songwriter, for one night at least.

A knock rattled the door. “Colleen called. She’ll be here in about fifteen minutes.”

Scarlett’s stomach flipped over, and she scurried to the toilet.

“Are you okay in there?” Cordelia called through the door.

“Great,” she croaked.

“Since you just lost dinner, do you want me to order you a snack to go?”

“Don’t joke.” She brushed her teeth again. She opened the bathroom door. “I can’t do this. What if they all hate me?”

“Why would they hate you?”

“Because I’m not part of the Hollywood set?”

“We’re invited.
